From Jersey Shore to Global Shores: A Journey of Growth and Discovery

Growing up in New Jersey, "going down the shore" was more than just a summer activity—it was a way of life. The Jersey shore has its own rhythm, its own charm, and a culture that many outside the United States might only know from TV shows or movies. But for me, the real magic wasn’t in the crowded boardwalks or the noisy arcades. It was in the quiet moments, especially off-season, when the beach was empty, and the only sound was the ocean waves crashing against the shore.

That peacefulness became my refuge during stressful times. I would visit the beach even in winter, wrapped in layers, watching the endless horizon. It was there I dreamed of a life beyond New Jersey, beyond the familiar American culture I grew up with. Years later, those dreams took me across the Atlantic, to the United Kingdom, where I now live abroad and experience a new world every day.

Finding Solace in the Jersey Shore

The Jersey shore is often portrayed as a bustling summer hotspot filled with tourists, boardwalk games, and loud music. While that’s part of its appeal, the best times I found were when the crowds disappeared. The off-season brought a different kind of beauty—quiet mornings with the salty breeze, the sound of seagulls, and the endless ocean stretching out before me.

During those moments, I felt grounded. The ocean reminded me that life keeps moving, no matter what challenges I faced. When I was younger, unsure about my future, the shore was my place to think. I would stare out at the horizon and wonder what life was like on the other side of the water. Was it as exciting as the movies showed? Were people there different from those I knew in New Jersey?

This curiosity planted a seed. I wanted to explore, to experience life beyond the United States, but it felt like a distant dream.

The Leap to Living Abroad

Fast forward a few decades, and I found myself standing on a different shore—this time in the United Kingdom. The scene was familiar yet new. Instead of sandy beaches, I stood on pebbles. Instead of noisy boardwalks, there were small huts and quiet paths. The ocean was still there, but the world on the other side felt closer than ever.

Moving abroad was a big step. It meant leaving behind the American culture I knew and embracing British culture, with all its unique customs, accents, and traditions. It wasn’t always easy. There were moments of homesickness and culture shock. But the excitement of living abroad outweighed the challenges.

Being an American in the UK gave me a fresh perspective on both cultures. I noticed the small differences in daily life—from how people greet each other to the way tea time is almost a sacred ritual. These experiences deepened my appreciation for diversity and helped me grow personally.

Embracing New Experiences and Growth

Living abroad has taught me to be adaptable and open-minded. Here are some lessons I’ve learned along the way:

  • Patience with cultural differences: British culture values politeness and understatement, which can feel very different from the more direct American culture I was used to. Learning to read between the lines has been essential.

  • Finding community: Being far from New Jersey, I sought out fellow Americans and locals who shared my interests. This helped me build a support network and feel less isolated.

  • Exploring new places: The UK is full of history and natural beauty. From coastal towns to bustling cities, every weekend offers a chance to discover something new.

  • Balancing old and new: I still cherish my roots in the United States, but I’ve also embraced my new home. This balance enriches my identity and broadens my worldview.

Looking Back and Moving Forward

Standing on this new shore, I reflect on how far I’ve come. The dreams I had as a young person looking out over the New Jersey ocean have become a reality. I’m not just visiting new places—I’m living abroad, fully immersed in a different culture and way of life.

This journey has been about more than geography. It’s about growth, discovery, and the courage to step outside comfort zones. Whether it’s the quiet moments on a winter beach in New Jersey or the bustling streets of a British city, each experience has shaped who I am.

For anyone curious about what it’s like to be an American in the UK or thinking about moving abroad, my advice is simple: embrace the unknown. The world is bigger than we imagine, and sometimes the best way to find yourself is to explore the world on the other side of the ocean.
